My name is Duan Dewet van den Berg, born in Heilbron, Free State on the 1st of February 1989. I am the youngest of 3 siblings, my sister , Chariza(41), brother Leon(38) and myself (26). My dad, Leon is 61 and my mom, Rentia passed away about 3 and a half years ago.
Since I can remember I was a very active child. Participating in every sport imagineable. I really excelled in Rugby and Cricket, throughout primary and high school, and made every age group provincial side in both sports.
Cricket seemed to be what I was gonna do until I was contracted to the Lions Rugby Union after my matric year in 2007. I played professionally for 4 years before injury setbacks forced me to stop. Through all my weight training for my strength and conditioning, I slowly fell in love with the process of pushing my body past limits that seemed achievable.
My first inspiration was when I met Jacques van der Linde, a personal friend of my brothers, and at that time he was THE fitness/muscle model guy in South Africa. Till this day I feel he was the first guy to really make it in a sense, and that made a living out of fitness. Then came along a guy we all know, someone I am privileged to call a personal friend, and the guy that was by far my biggest motivation and inspiration to date. Jaco de Bruyn just took what we all thought was impossible and quite frankly showed everyone a big up yours, when he became one of the most popular fitness models in the world, with a following growing daily. He is the epitome of marketing, how to build yourself as a brand and an all-round great guy and friend to have.
When it comes to myself and competing, I only stepped on stage for the first time in 2015 at the Rossi Grand Prix in May, where I placed 3rd in both the front cover and model plus categories. I competed again at the IFBB Gauteng North Provincial show in August in the Physique division where I placed 4th as I did not fit the criteria.
There are so many people to thank for inspiring, motivating and guiding me on this journey. Too many to mention, but you all know who you are. I can’t thank you enough for awakening this passion inside of me. I love this, I live for this, this is who I am, I want to give back, inspire and motivate. If I can change or make a difference in one person’s life, I will be satisfied.
My future plans, dreams and goals are big. My 1st show in 2016 will be the WBFF show (date to be confirmed) and obviously my goal is to get a Pro Card, as it is the goal of 100’s of others. Without being unrealistic it is something I feel is attainable in the near future. After this I will re-evaluate with my coach Stefan Estment and decide which shows will be next.
My involvement with Dubs and Laymen’s Lament is once again to educate, but for me it is trying to educate the Layman on the unknowns in our industry. The costs involved, back stage “bitchyness”, politics, the pro’s and cons, relationships in fitness, the stigma behind illegal supplements(gear, juice, roids, steroids, meds) call it what you want. This is also opinion based but there will definitely be factual backing on some of the topics. I am looking at involving some of the most knowledgeable coaches, athletes etc. on my blogs and in my articles. We will also be selecting a few athletes to do interviews with, in more of a social setting, getting to know the actual person, and not the athlete.
I really look forward to this journey, and I hope that you guys will love and follow the content “religiously”. You are welcome to ask questions at any given point or to make topical suggestions that we would try and cover.
Yours in Fitness
